Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is a universal genius who, simultaneously with Newton (and independently of him), created differential and integral calculus. His ideas permeate mathematics, philosophy, logic, and computer science: the binary number system, the mechanical calculating machine, and the concept of a universal language of science.

Biography

Born in Leipzig, he studied philosophy and law at the universities of Leipzig and Jena. He served as a diplomat and advisor at European courts, maintaining extensive correspondence with scientists and monarchs. He founded the Berlin Academy of Sciences and advised Peter the Great on creating an academy in St. Petersburg. He spent the last years of his life in Hanover, working on the history of the House of Welf.

Key discoveries

💡 Leibniz dreamed of creating a characteristica universalis — a universal language that would allow any concept to be expressed strictly, and then resolve any disputes by calculation. Today, his idea is partly embodied by formal logics and programming languages.
