Willem de Sitter

1872–1934 · Cosmology, astronomy
Dutch astronomer who proposed a model of the Universe with a cosmological constant that expands exponentially. His solution to Einstein's equations (de Sitter space) became a prototype for inflationary cosmology. He made enormous contributions to celestial mechanics and the organization of astronomical research.

Biography

He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Groningen. He worked at the Leiden Observatory and became its director. He engaged in intensive correspondence with Einstein and other physicists, discussing the nature of space-time.

Key discoveries

💡 De Sitter was the first to propose the idea that the speed of light is constant and independent of the source's velocity, which became one of the principles of special relativity.
"He asserted that the expansion of the universe is an observable fact that changes our understanding of reality, not just a theory."
