An active galactic nucleus is a compact central region whose luminosity far exceeds the total radiation of all the galaxy's stars. The energy comes from accretion (infall) of gas and dust onto a supermassive black hole (millions to billions of solar masses). The material spirals into a disk, heating to millions of degrees, and shines brightly in X-ray and ultraviolet. Powerful magnetic fields sometimes create jets — relativistic plasma streams ejected over tens of thousands of light-years.

History

The first active nuclei — quasars — were discovered in the early 1960s. Radio astronomers found point-like sources resembling stars, but their spectra matched no known object. In 1963, Maarten Schmidt realized they were distant galaxies with an unusually bright center.

How it works

Gas and dust around the black hole form a rapidly rotating accretion disk — a flattened cloud like a whirlpool. Friction and gravity convert rotational energy into heat and light. Some material is ejected outward as narrow jets — along the black hole's rotation axis.
