The dark photon is a hypothetical vector boson associated with a U(1) symmetry in the hidden sector of particle physics, analogous to the photon for electromagnetism. It interacts with Standard Model particles through kinetic mixing with the ordinary photon — a small parameter ε, a "leakage" between dark and ordinary electrodynamics. The mass of the dark photon can range from micro-electronvolts to hundreds of GeV.

History

The idea of the dark photon emerged at the end of the 20th century when physicists were looking for ways to explain dark matter.

How it works

If dark photons exist, they can occasionally mix with ordinary photons, becoming briefly visible. It's like two parallel roads with very rare pedestrian crossings.
