electromagnetic radiation

Electromagnetic radiation is propagating oscillations of electric and magnetic fields. They carry energy and momentum without the need for a medium. The spectrum extends from long radio waves to gamma rays. Visible light is just a narrow band in this range.

History

James Clerk Maxwell theoretically predicted such waves in the 19th century, and Heinrich Hertz later created them in the laboratory. Scientists realized that visible light is also an electromagnetic wave.

How it works

If you shake an electric charge, it creates a changing electric field around it, which in turn generates a magnetic one, and so on in a chain — the wave runs forward. It’s similar to jerking a rope: the impulse travels along it.

💡 A microwave oven uses radiation with a wavelength of about 12 cm, causing water molecules to rotate and heat food, but a dry plate hardly heats up.
