Feynman diagram

Particles at the quantum level constantly transform into each other. A Feynman diagram is a visual scheme where lines are particles and the points where lines meet are moments of their interaction. Like a traffic diagram for the microworld.

History

Proposed by Richard Feynman in 1948 to simplify calculations in quantum electrodynamics.

How it works

Each line corresponds to a particle: photons are wavy lines, electrons are straight lines. Vertices where lines meet show interaction. Analogy: like a culinary recipe: arrows show what mixes with what, so a diagram shows which particles collide and what results.

💡 Feynman himself drew these diagrams on napkins in cafes. Now, no research in particle physics is complete without them.
