fluctuation

Fluctuation is a spontaneous deviation of a macroscopic parameter (temperature, density, energy) from its equilibrium value. In closed systems, it is smaller the more particles there are, but in the micro-world, quantum fluctuations are fundamental: even absolute zero does not freeze the zero-point oscillations of fields.

History

Systematic study began in the 19th century: Robert Brown discovered Brownian motion (1827), and Ludwig Boltzmann and Josiah Gibbs created statistical mechanics, which explained these fluctuations.

How it works

Imagine a beach with people: on average, everyone is lying evenly, but sometimes clusters form around the ice cream vendor. So it is with molecules in the air: in a room, pressure is constant, but in a microscopic volume, density jumps — these are fluctuations.

💡 The cosmic microwave background radiation is an 'imprint' of quantum fluctuations of the early universe, magnified by inflation to sizes that gave birth to galaxies.
