Galactic evolution studies how galaxies—systems of dark matter, gas, and stars—grow and change. Small galaxies merge into larger ones, and supermassive black holes and supernova explosions regulate star birth. A galaxy's shape (spiral or elliptical) reflects its merger history and the availability of cold gas.

History

In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble classified galaxies by their appearance, and later Vera Rubin discovered hidden mass (dark matter) in them, without which their fast rotation cannot be explained.

How it works

Just as a river carries silt and builds islands, gas flows into galaxies and fuels star formation. When galaxies collide, stars rarely hit each other, but gas clouds get compressed, triggering a burst of new star birth.

💡 In 4.5 billion years, our Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy and transform into a giant elliptical galaxy.
