Homotopy is like a smooth deformation: turning a cup into a doughnut without tearing. Two objects are homotopic if one can be smoothly transformed into the other without gluing or cutting. It is a branch of mathematics that studies such elusive shapes.

History

The concept was introduced by Henri Poincaré in the late 19th century in his works on qualitative geometry. He applied it to classify surfaces.

How it works

Two loops on a surface are homotopic if one can be shrunk to the other without leaving the surface. Analogy: like a rubber band on a globe: can it be shrunk to a point without slipping off the sphere.

💡 Mathematicians joke that from the perspective of topology, a cup with a handle is the same as a doughnut. And homotopy helps rigorously prove such transformations!
