interferometry

Interferometry is a technique that uses the interference of coherent waves for precision measurements. By comparing the phases of superimposed waves, it is possible to detect changes on the order of a wavelength - in the optical range, this is fractions of a micron. It is widely used in metrology, astronomy (VLBI, astrometric interferometer), and fundamental physics.

History

Invented and applied by Albert Michelson in the late 19th century. With his interferometer, he proved that light does not need a special substance (ether) to propagate, and accurately measured the speed of light.

How it works

In an interferometer, a laser beam is split into two. One reflects off a moving mirror, the other off a stationary one. Together they create fringes. The shift of fringes indicates microscopic movement of the mirror, enabling measurement of length, vibrations, and even gravity.

💡 The LIGO interferometer detects mirror displacements of 10⁻¹⁸ meter - that's a thousand times smaller than a proton, which is like measuring the distance to the nearest star with hair's breadth accuracy.
