Isotopes are 'twin brothers' of chemical elements. They have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, so they behave almost identically in chemistry but may have different masses. For example, all carbon atoms have 6 protons, but carbon-12 and carbon-14 are isotopes with 6 and 8 neutrons, respectively.

History

The term 'isotope' was proposed by Frederick Soddy in 1913. He noticed that radioactive elements could occupy the same place in the periodic table but have different atomic masses.

How it works

The properties of isotopes are determined by the number of neutrons. In nature, most elements are a mixture of stable isotopes, but there are also radioactive ones. Analogy: like in a family, children may be of the same height but different weights—they have similar character (chemical properties) but different physical parameters.

💡 Carbon-14 helps archaeologists determine the age of ancient finds. It is radioactive and gradually decays, so by measuring how much remains, one can find out when the organism died.
