Methane is an invisible gas that escapes from the ground in swamps and from the stomach of a cow as it digests grass. Imagine the methane molecule as a tiny tetrahedral hedgehog: a carbon atom in the center holds four hydrogen 'spines'. It is lighter than air, so like a balloon, it rises into the sky if set free.

History

Methane was first identified by the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta in 1776. He collected gas from the bottom of Lake Maggiore and ignited it, proving it was a combustible substance.

How it works

The greenhouse effect of methane is like a down duvet: sunlight easily penetrates through it to the Earth, but the planet’s thermal radiation gets trapped because methane molecules vibrate and absorb infrared rays, like a stretched spring resonating at a certain frequency.

💡 Methane is called swamp gas because it bubbles up in bogs — that’s how bacteria finish off plant remains without oxygen, like tiny chefs making an invisible soup.
