molecular cloud

Molecular clouds are the main reservoir of cold interstellar gas. Their diameters reach 600 light-years, and masses—millions of solar masses. They are opaque to visible light but transparent to radio waves, which allows radio telescopes to study their structure. More than 200 types of molecules have been found in them, including organic ones (ethanol, glycolaldehyde). The clouds live for tens of millions of years, after which the radiation of young hot stars disperses the remaining gas.

History

In the mid-20th century, astronomers assumed that interstellar matter accumulates in dense clumps that give birth to stars. In the 1970s, radio observations of carbon monoxide (CO) for the first time directly detected giant molecular clouds in our Galaxy.

How it works

Gravity slowly pulls the cloud's matter inward. If enough mass accumulates in some region, gravity overcomes the internal pressure, and the clump begins to contract faster and faster. In the end, at its center, the temperature becomes so high that nuclear reactions ignite—a star is born.

💡 In the molecular cloud Sagittarius B2, enormous quantities of ethyl alcohol have been found—enough to theoretically 'fill' an uncountable number of bottles, but in reality it is extremely cold and ionized gas.
