In solids, atoms are not frozen in place but constantly oscillate. A phonon is the quantum of these vibrations, like a drop of water in a wave.

History

The concept of quantized lattice vibrations was introduced by Soviet physicist Yakov Frenkel in 1932; the term "phonon" was proposed by Igor Tamm.

How it works

Phonons carry heat and sound in solids. When you heat one end of a metal spoon, heat spreads via phonons—they pass energy from atom to atom like a relay baton.
