Plasma is an ionized gas of free electrons and positive ions. Unlike a neutral gas, it is electrically conductive and subject to the influence of electromagnetic fields. More than 99% of the visible matter in the Universe is plasma: stars, interstellar gas, accretion disks. On Earth, it can be found in lightning, auroras, and artificial devices from neon signs to tokamaks.

History

The word 'plasma' (from Greek 'molded') was proposed by American physicist Irving Langmuir in 1928 while studying electrical discharges in gases. But the phenomenon has long been known: lightning and St. Elmo's fire are plasma.

How it works

When strongly heated, collisions between atoms knock electrons out of their orbits. A mixture of charged particles forms that collectively responds to electric and magnetic fields — much like a flock of birds simultaneously changing direction.

💡 Plasma can spontaneously form structures — 'plasma crystals,' ordered lattices of charged dust particles floating in the plasma.
