qubit

Qubit — the elementary carrier of quantum information. Unlike a bit, rigidly fixed at 0 or 1, a qubit realizes superposition — a mathematical combination of two states described by complex amplitudes. Measurement collapses the superposition into one of the basis states with a probability equal to the squared modulus of the amplitude.

History

The term 'qubit' was proposed by physicist Benjamin Schumacher in 1995, inspired by work on quantum computing. The very idea of quantum information was developed by Richard Feynman and David Deutsch since the 1980s.

How it works

Any interaction with a qubit is compared to a hand touching a spinning top: it immediately changes its rotation. In the quantum world, qubit control is designed so that they 'feel' each other without direct contact — thanks to entanglement (a special connection at a distance).

💡 Even the simplest operation on a qubit is mathematically equivalent to rotating the Bloch sphere — an imaginary three-dimensional sphere on whose surface all possible states live.
