singularity

A singularity is a region of spacetime where curvature and density become infinite, and known physical theories (general relativity and quantum mechanics) lose meaning. Such singularities are predicted at the centers of black holes and at the point of the Big Bang. Einstein's equations cease to work there, and a theory of quantum gravity is required.

History

The first mathematical description of a singularity appeared in Karl Schwarzschild's solution in 1916. Later, Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking proved that singularities inevitably arise during the collapse of massive stars.

How it works

A rubber sheet bends under the weight of a ball—this is how gravity works; if the ball is compressed into a point, the sheet ruptures, forming an infinitely sharp funnel. Similarly, spacetime 'tears' at a singularity, creating infinite curvature.

💡 When falling into a black hole, an astronaut reaches the singularity in finite proper time, but for an external observer, he never crosses the horizon—this contradiction illustrates the conflict between theories.
