Spacetime is like a fabric that unifies space and time into a single whole. Imagine the Universe as a giant trampoline. If you place a heavy ball (a star) on it, it will sag, and everything around will start moving toward that depression. Time also slows down near massive objects—as if clocks run slower when they are near the ball.

History

The idea of spacetime was introduced by Hermann Minkowski in 1908, unifying space and time into a four-dimensional continuum. Later, Albert Einstein developed it into the general theory of relativity (1915), showing that gravity is the curvature of spacetime. Scientists such as Henri Poincaré and Karl Schwarzschild contributed to understanding its properties.

How it works

Curved spacetime manifests as gravity: planets revolve around the Sun not because something attracts them, but because the Sun warps spacetime, and they move along the straightest possible lines in this curved world—geodesics. It is as if an ant crawled on a crumpled sheet of paper: to it, the path seems straight, but in fact it goes around a dent.

💡 If you could travel at a speed close to the speed of light, time would flow slower for you, and you could "travel into the future" faster than people on Earth!
