synchrotron radiation

Relativistic electrons entering a magnetic field experience acceleration perpendicular to their velocity and emit electromagnetic waves. Due to the high speed, the radiation is concentrated in a narrow cone along the direction of motion. The spectrum of synchrotron radiation is broad — from radio to X-rays. The radiation power increases with the particle energy and field strength.

History

First noticed in 1947 by engineers at a synchrotron accelerator when they saw a bright glow.

How it works

The magnetic field forces electrons to move in a circle, their path is bent, and they lose energy by emitting photons (light particles). This light is emitted in a narrow beam forward, like from a searchlight.

💡 Synchrotron radiation from giant jets of black holes is so powerful that it is visible through telescopes across billions of light-years.
