virtual particle

Virtual particles are quantum fluctuations of fields (quantum fields are fundamental entities describing particles as excitations) that briefly appear in the vacuum due to energy uncertainty. They do not exist as real free particles but mediate interactions and alter the properties of the vacuum.

History

The idea emerged in the 1920s-30s with the development of quantum electrodynamics and was formally described in the 1940s by Richard Feynman and others.

How it works

Two ships exchange swift rowers who burst from the water and return. The rowers are unseen but push the ships. Similarly, virtual particles carry forces between ordinary particles: for example, virtual photons make a magnet attract.

💡 The energy of virtual particles affects the spectrum of the hydrogen atom — this is called the Lamb shift, measured with incredible precision.
