The wave function is a mathematical description of a cloud of probabilities. Imagine you throw a pebble into a pond: the ripples on the water show where the particle might be. It's like a musical chord that sounds all notes at once, until you press one key.

History

Erwin Schrödinger introduced the wave function in 1926, trying to describe the behavior of electrons in atoms.

How it works

When we don't observe, the electron is in all possible places simultaneously, like a smeared ripple on a pond. Measurement forces it to take a specific position - just as when you touch water, the circles disappear and we see the point of impact.

💡 If you measure the wave function, it "collapses" into one value - as if from a whole ocean of possibilities, one fish is picked.
