Vladimír Šverák

род. 1959 – present · Mathematics, Partial differential equations, Calculus of variations
Vladimir Šverák is a Czech-American mathematician specializing in partial differential equations and the calculus of variations. In the context of the Navier–Stokes equations, he is known for his 2003 work, co-authored with L. Escauriaza and G. Seregin, which proved that if a suitable weak solution satisfies a boundedness condition on the norm in the space L∞L³, then it is regular. This result refines regularity criteria and shows that possible singularities must be sufficiently strong. Šverák has also contributed to the theory of elasticity and nonlinear elliptic systems.

Biography

Vladimir Šverák was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1959. He received his PhD from Charles University in Prague. He has worked at the University of Minnesota, where he is a professor. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1998.
