Vlad Vicol is a Romanian-American mathematician, professor at New York University. His key contribution to the Navier–Stokes problem is a 2019 joint work with Tristan Buckmaster, in which they proved non-uniqueness of weak solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations. Using the technique of convex integration, they showed that one can construct infinitely many weak solutions with the same initial data, undermining hope for uniqueness in the class of Leray weak solutions. Additionally, Vicol actively works on the Onsager conjecture concerning the regularity threshold for the Euler equations. His results are directly relevant to understanding how energy can dissipate in turbulent flows and to the question of possible finite-time blowup in the Navier–Stokes equations.

Biography

Vlad Vicol was born in Romania and received his education in Romania and the United States. He earned his PhD at the University of Southern California, then worked at the University of Chicago and Princeton University. He is currently a professor of mathematics at New York University (NYU). He is known for his work on fluid dynamics equations, especially on regularity and non-uniqueness problems.
