Imagine that electrons in a solid are like bees in a large hive. They can only fly on certain 'floors' or 'combs'. These allowed levels are called bands. The band structure is a map showing which energy floors electrons can occupy, and where they are forbidden to appear—these are forbidden bands. It's like in a multi-story building, some floors are occupied, and others are completely empty.

History

The idea of band structure was first proposed by Felix Bloch in 1928, solving the Schrödinger equation for an electron in a periodic lattice field. Erwin Schrödinger, the creator of wave mechanics, thereby laid the foundations for this discovery.

How it works

In an isolated atom, electrons occupy discrete orbitals. When atoms come together to form a crystal, their orbitals overlap and split into many levels, forming almost continuous bands. The distance between atoms determines whether the bands will overlap or a forbidden band remains. It's like placing many identical tuning forks in a row: each gives one note, but together they create a whole chord with new frequencies.

💡 Thanks to band structure, some materials shine like metals (they have no forbidden band), while others are transparent, like glass (the forbidden band is too large for visible light). That's why metals conduct electricity, and plastic doesn't.
