Cosmic rays are an invisible shower of particles from deep space that passes through your body every second. They are born in the most powerful explosions in the universe and travel to us like messages from the stars.

History

In 1912, Victor Hess ascended in a balloon with an electroscope and discovered that radiation increases with altitude. Thus cosmic rays—visitors from beyond Earth—were discovered.

How it works

Upon reaching the atmosphere, a particle strikes an atomic nucleus, triggering a cascade of secondary particles—an extensive air shower. Like a billiard ball breaking a rack, it creates an avalanche of millions of 'fragments' that reach the surface.

💡 The most energetic cosmic ray particle, the 'Oh-My-God particle', had the energy of a baseball thrown by a champion. Such a tiny speck could light a bulb for a second.
