
In 1998, two independent groups of astronomers, observing type Ia supernovae, discovered that the Universe is expanding with acceleration. This came as a shock: it was expected that gravity slows down expansion. The discovery brought the Nobel Prize, and the phenomenon itself was called dark energy — in honor of its invisible and mysterious nature.
Dark energy acts like antigravity: it creates negative pressure that pushes space apart. The simplest option is the cosmological constant, proposed by Einstein, which can be imagined as the energy of the vacuum itself. But where it comes from and why there is so much of it is still a mystery.
