density matrix

If we don't know exactly what state a quantum system is in, we can describe it with a density matrix – it's like a surprise box: there could be one toy inside, but we're not sure which one, we only know the probabilities.

History

The density matrix formalism was independently proposed by John von Neumann (1927) and Lev Landau (1927) to describe mixed quantum states that arise, for example, in thermodynamics.

How it works

Imagine a shuffled deck of cards: you don't know which card is on top – only probabilities. The density matrix sets these probabilities and also contains hidden information about entanglement. For example, if two particles are linked (entangled), the density matrix for one of them will be mixed, even if the overall system is pure.

💡 A density matrix is like a recipe with probabilities: for example, there might be carrots or onions in the soup, but until you look, you don't know. In the quantum world, this is how mixed states are described.
