electric field

An electric field is an invisible force around charged objects. Like water around a magnet creating circles, the electric field draws lines along which a charge will move. When you touch synthetic clothing and hear a crackle, you are feeling the electric field.

History

The concept of the field was introduced by Michael Faraday in the 19th century, and James Clerk Maxwell later described it mathematically in his famous equations.

How it works

Imagine that around each charge - like around a pebble thrown into water - ripples spread. These ripples show where another charge will move. Positive and negative charges create fields that either merge or cancel each other out.

💡 Lightning is a giant discharge that occurs due to the huge difference in electric fields between clouds and the ground.
