globular cluster

Globular clusters are gravitationally bound systems of tens of thousands to millions of stars, aged 10–13 billion years. Their nearly perfect spherical shape is due to mutual attraction, and the core has an extremely high density of stars. The chemical composition is poor in elements heavier than helium (astronomers call this low metallicity), which indicates their birth in the early Universe.

History

In 1746, Jean-Dominique Maraldi first distinguished a globular cluster among other objects. Much later, in the early 20th century, astronomer Harlow Shapley used their distribution to realize that the Sun is far from the center of the Milky Way.

How it works

The stars in the cluster attract each other and revolve around a common center of mass. In the middle, they are packed more tightly and exchange gravitational kicks, changing their velocities and trajectories. This does not destroy the cluster, allowing it to live for billions of years.

💡 Some clusters, such as Omega Centauri, may hide a black hole of intermediate mass at their center—a 'missing link' between light and supermassive black holes, the key to understanding black hole growth.
