gluon

Gluons are invisible threads that glue quarks in protons and neutrons, like superglue. Without them all matter would crumble into dust.

History

In 1979 at the PETRA collider in Germany, physicists first observed three-jet events in electron-positron collisions — direct evidence of gluon radiation by quarks.

How it works

When quarks exchange gluons, they change their color, like players in tag exchanging colored ribbons. This vigorous exchange prevents quarks from flying apart, holding them inside hadrons like in a tight sack.

💡 Gluons are so sticky that they cling not only to quarks but also to each other! This makes the strong interaction very unusual.
