gravitational potential

Imagine a huge trampoline with a heavy ball placed on it. The closer to the ball, the more the trampoline sags. Gravitational potential is a measure of how "deeply" you are sunk into this dip. Massive objects create a deep pit, while light ones create a barely noticeable one.

History

The concept arose from Newton's law of universal gravitation. The potential simplified force calculations. In the mid-19th century, Gauss generalized it, and in the 21st century, the potential helps search for dark matter through gravitational lensing.

How it works

Around any body there is an invisible "potential well". Falling into it, an object accelerates, like a snowboarder on a steep slope. The more massive the body and the closer to it, the steeper the slope. In general relativity, this well is the curvature of spacetime.

💡 If the Earth were compressed to the size of a walnut, its gravitational potential would become so deep that even light could not escape — a tiny black hole would form.
