
The idea of a space telescope was voiced as early as the 1940s, but Hubble was launched in 1990 on the shuttle Discovery. Named after Edwin Hubble, who proved the expansion of the Universe. Right after launch, it was discovered that the primary mirror had a defect, and the first repair mission in 1993 installed corrective optics, 'putting glasses' on the telescope.
Hubble works like a giant bucket collecting raindrops: its concave 2.4-meter mirror captures the faint light of distant stars and directs it to electronic detectors. The cameras accumulate photons for hours, just as water drop by drop fills a bucket.
