interference

Interference is the superposition of waves, where they either reinforce or cancel each other out. Like ripples on water from two thrown stones: in some places waves meet crest to crest and grow, in others they cancel, and the water is almost still.

History

The phenomenon of light interference was first systematically investigated by Thomas Young in 1801 in the famous double-slit experiment, proving the wave nature of light. Later, James Clerk Maxwell unified electricity and magnetism into electrodynamics, describing light as an electromagnetic wave, which deepened the understanding of interference.

How it works

When two waves meet, their amplitudes add up. If crest meets crest, there is reinforcement (constructive interference) and brightness; if crest meets trough, cancellation (destructive) and darkness. Analogy with an orchestra: if instruments play in unison, the sound is stronger; if not, cacophony ensues.
