Meteorites are solid extraterrestrial bodies that have fallen onto a planet's surface. Sizes range from millimeter-sized dust to blocks several meters across. The main source is asteroids, but fragments from the Moon and Mars are also found. By composition, they are classified as stony meteorites (including chondrites and achondrites), iron meteorites, and stony-iron meteorites. Chondrites contain chondrules—millimeter-sized spheres formed by rapid cooling of matter in the protoplanetary disk.

History

People have long found unusual stones, but for a long time they did not believe in their celestial origin. In the early 19th century, a major meteorite shower in France and a thorough investigation by scientist Jean-Baptiste Biot convinced the scientific world that stones indeed fall from the sky.

How it works

Meteorites are fragments of asteroids, less often comets or other planets. As a result of collisions, they are ejected into interplanetary space and, after millions of years, may cross Earth's orbit. Just as a river brings stones from the mountains, cosmic trajectories deliver these celestial wanderers to us.

💡 The Allende meteorite, which fell in Mexico in 1969, is 4.567 billion years old—older than Earth.
