
Charles Messier first cataloged nebulae in the 18th century, mistaking them for comets. Later, William Herschel divided them into star clusters and true clouds. Photographic spectra in the 19th century revealed their gaseous composition — the work of William Huggins.
Gas in the nebula is ionized by ultraviolet light from young hot stars. Electrons, falling back onto nuclei, emit light of very specific colors — a palette by which chemists recognize hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen. Radiation pressure inflates the material, and supernova shock waves stir the layers like a spoon in a pot.
