phase space

Phase space is a map of all possible states of a system: where each object is and how fast it is moving. For a pendulum, it is a circle: height and speed always change together, tracing a closed loop.

History

The concept evolved in the works of Hamilton and Jacobi in the 19th century, but Henri Poincaré gave it real depth while studying the stability of the Solar System. He was the first to glimpse the chaotic intertwining of trajectories in phase space.

How it works

The trajectory of a system in phase space never crosses itself—like a thread laid without knots. This fundamental property, discovered by Liouville, means that clouds of states change shape but not volume, like kneading dough.

💡 The phase space of a single particle has six dimensions (three coordinates and three velocities), and a dust speck dancing in a light beam already wanders in a twelve-dimensional world.
