
The idea of the field dates back to Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th century, but it was given a quantum form in the 20th century. Wolfgang Pauli and Satyendra Nath Bose laid the foundations of statistics governing fields, and Emmy Noether connected field symmetries with conservation laws.
Throw a stone into a pond and circles will spread. The quantum field is like the surface of water: the circles are particles, and their intensity is the number of particles. Fields permeate space, and their oscillations create everything we see.
