Solar wind

The solar wind is a stream of plasma (a mixture of free electrons and ions) flowing from the solar corona at speeds from 300 to 800 km/s. It carries the Sun's magnetic field frozen into it, which, due to the star's rotation, twists into a Parker spiral. Slow wind comes from quiet regions, fast wind from coronal holes. At Earth, the solar wind shapes the magnetosphere and causes geomagnetic storms.

History

In the 1950s, physicist Eugene Parker predicted that the hot solar corona could not be held by gravity and must expand as a supersonic flow (faster than the speed of sound). In the early 1960s, the first spacecraft confirmed his theory.

How it works

This can be compared to steam over a boiling pot: the outer atmosphere of the Sun (the corona) is heated to millions of degrees, causing particles to accelerate and fly off into space, dragging the magnetic field with them.

💡 The solar wind creates a giant protective bubble around the Solar System — the heliosphere, which deflects most harmful galactic cosmic rays.
