spectrometer

A spectrometer is an instrument for measuring the distribution of electromagnetic radiation by wavelength or frequency. Main components: an entrance slit, a dispersive element (prism or diffraction grating), focusing optics, and a detector (CCD array, photomultiplier). Spectrometers are distinguished by range: ultraviolet, visible, infrared, X-ray, etc. A spectrograph is an instrument that records the entire spectrum simultaneously. Key characteristics are spectral resolution and light throughput.

History

The first prototype of a spectrometer was a glass prism used by Isaac Newton in 1666 to decompose sunlight. Later, Joseph von Fraunhofer added a diffraction grating and saw dark lines in the Sun's spectrum.

How it works

Light passes through a narrow slit and hits an element that separates it by wavelength—this could be a prism (refracts violet more strongly) or a diffraction grating (reflects different colors at different angles). The detector records how much light arrives at each microscopic section. This constructs the spectrum—a graph of brightness versus wavelength.

💡 Every chemical element leaves a unique “fingerprint” in the spectrum—a set of bright lines. This is how astronomers determined that the Sun and other stars are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium.
