
The foundations of spectroscopy were laid by Isaac Newton in 1666, when he split sunlight with a prism. In the 19th century, Joseph Fraunhofer discovered dark lines in the solar spectrum, and Gustav Kirchhoff and Robert Bunsen linked them to chemical elements. Later, Johann Balmer found a mathematical pattern in the lines of hydrogen.
Spectroscopy works like a music analyzer: hot gas emits light at specific frequencies (like a string playing its note). When this light passes through a prism, we see bright lines against a dark background. If starlight passes through a cold gas, the atoms absorb those same frequencies, creating dark gaps. By analyzing these lines, we learn the elements, temperature, and even magnetic fields.
