spin foam

Spin foam is a formalism of loop quantum gravity, where spacetime is represented not as a continuous background, but as an evolving network of boundary surfaces (simplices), each face of which is labeled by quantum numbers — spins. These spins determine the area of the face in Planck units.

History

The idea grew out of John Wheeler's foam model in the 1950s, and the modern incarnation — spin foams — was developed in the 1990s by Carlo Rovelli, Lee Smolin, and others.

How it works

Just as molecules in a crystal form a lattice, spin 'cubes' connect, forming quantum geometry. At very high energies, this pattern might manifest, perhaps inside black holes or at the beginning of the Big Bang.

💡 If a 'quantum microscope' existed, at the scale of 10⁻³⁵ meters (Planck length), space would look like a bubbling foam with changing topology.
