superfluidity

Superfluidity is a macroscopic quantum effect where a fluid moves without dissipation, has zero viscosity, and can flow through capillaries without resistance. It is observed in liquid helium-4 (bosons) at 2.17 K and in helium-3 (fermions) at about 2.6 mK.

History

Discovered in 1937 by Pyotr Kapitsa (not in the list) and independently by John Allen and Don Misener. Lev Landau explained it with a quantum theory. Later, scientists understood that superfluidity is linked to the condensation of atoms into a single quantum state.

How it works

At ultra-low temperatures, helium atoms behave like one giant quantum particle (Bose-Einstein condensate), moving coherently without collisions that cause friction.

💡 Superfluid helium-4 creates a fountain up to 40 cm high at the slightest thermal disturbance — this thermomechanical effect looks like a sudden geyser in a laboratory vessel.
