
Supernovae were first observed by Chinese astronomers as early as 185 AD. In the 20th century, Fritz Zwicky defined them as a separate class and predicted that they leave behind neutron stars.
In a massive star, nuclear fusion creates iron. But iron does not burn, and the core stops pushing outward. Gravity crushes the core into a neutron star or black hole, while the outer layers rebound and are flung into space.
