A study in the Netherlands reveals three scenarios for how people leave a train station — and it's changing urban planning approaches.
Abstract

Leveraging stated preference surveys and latent class modeling, researchers analyzed how Dutch residents decide to travel to and from the station. Three distinct groups emerged: 'multimodal sharing enthusiasts' (58%)—open to various micromobility modes based on trip specifics; 'cautious cyclists averse to sharing' (16%)—prefer personal bicycles, perceiving rentals as complex and hazardous; 'sharing opponents opting for public transport' (27%)—shun micromobility in favor of buses and trams. For short distances, pedestrian accessibility remains paramount, reinforcing transit-oriented development policies. Over longer spans in high-demand zones, dense and frequent public transport networks are warranted, while low-demand stations are better served by diverse micromobility options—though too many choices might merely compete for the same riders.
