The same gravitational signal from a black hole merger can reach us twice or even three times—like an echo off invisible “mountains” of dark matter. By analyzing these repeats and their delays, scientists have come up with a way to count ancient supermassive black holes, even if they never emit light. The new method promises to constrain their numbers more precisely than imaging entire galaxies.
