Black holes thought to be long dead may live longer thanks to the 'memory effect'. Their slow evaporation warmed ancient hydrogen, and now we see it in the distortion of the 21-cm signal — if there were many, the signal would be different. This opens a new way to hunt dark matter.

🎯 The most sensitive tool for hunting dark matter isn't a giant underground detector, but an ordinary radio telescope listening to the echo of hydrogen from the time before the first stars lit up.
