In a galaxy at the edge of the visible Universe, the glow of hot gas outshone starlight. The James Webb Space Telescope peered into an era when the first giant stars were born from pure hydrogen and helium. Perhaps their remnants still heat the cosmic gas, making distant galaxies unexpectedly bright.
