Robert Hooke

English naturalist, architect, and inventor, one of the most versatile scientists of his time. He formulated the law of elasticity, guessed the inverse-square law of gravity, and introduced the term "cell". His microscopic investigations opened a new world. For a long time, his achievements were underestimated due to his rivalry with Newton.

Biography

Born on the Isle of Wight, England. He was educated at Oxford, where he worked as an assistant to Robert Boyle. He became the first Curator of Experiments of the Royal Society, later its Secretary. After the Great Fire of London, he participated in the city's reconstruction as an architect. He was forced to engage in bitter priority disputes with Newton and Huygens.

Key discoveries

💡 Hooke was not only a scientist but also a talented architect; among his projects are the Monument to the Great Fire and the dome of the Greenwich Observatory. He also invented the balance spring for watches, but due to a dispute with Huygens, he did not obtain a patent.
