Studied at the US Naval Academy, received his doctorate from the Catholic University of America. Taught at the University of Maryland. In the 1950s, he became interested in general relativity and the predicted gravitational waves. From the early 1960s, he built massive aluminum cylinders to capture ultra-small vibrations. In 1969, he announced the detection of waves, but other laboratories could not reproduce the result. Despite criticism, he continued to improve detectors. His ideas inspired the creation of the LIGO facilities, which in 2015 confirmed the existence of gravitational waves.
