A sand dune gave astronomers a new cosmic ruler. Just as a dune's steepest slope is more stable than its crest, so too on the galaxy distribution graph does a special 'inflection point' blur less with time. This method, tested on DESI data, promises to measure dark energy more accurately and understand where the universe is heading.

🎯 The theoretical idea has been around since the 2010s, but only DESI's unprecedented maps allowed it to be used with sub-percent precision — and it turned out that the inflection point is more informative than the blurred peak.
